Over spring break, students from Moore and Westmoore high schools got a chance to step out of the classroom and into the heart of state government, thanks to a field trip organized by new OCCC political science instructor Greg Sember.

On the first day of the break, Westmoore High School students visited the Oklahoma State Capitol, where they met with state Sen. Darrell Weaver (R-Moore). The visit included a question-and-answer session in the Senate lounge, a tour of the Senate floor and recognition from Senate members while students observed the legislative process from the gallery. The group also explored the Oklahoma State Capitol Museum, where they discussed the building’s history.

The following morning, Moore High School students met with state Rep. Jason Blair (R-Moore). Like their Westmoore peers, the students were recognized from the House floor during session. Afterward, they engaged in an in-depth Q&A with Blair that allowed them to raise concerns about challenges related to school cellphone policies, particularly when devices are needed to access college-level coursework.

Both groups participated in post-visit discussions reflecting on the legislative process and their observations of how business is conducted within the chambers.

Sember described the experience as a valuable opportunity for both concurrent and traditional college students to engage directly with government in action.

Looking ahead, students will have another opportunity to expand their civic engagement with a planned visit to City Hall later in April. More details will be shared with interested participants.
