OCCC will offer a new course called Acting for the Camera this fall, providing students with the opportunity to develop on-screen performance skills in a hands-on learning environment.
Taught by adjunct instructor Thomas Chavira, the course will focus on helping students understand the techniques required to perform effectively in front of a camera – skills that differ significantly from traditional stage acting.
“The main goal is to develop techniques that will be effective in performing for the camera,” Chavira said. “Students will learn vocabulary, gain experience being in front of the camera and build skills that will help heighten performance, whether it’s in an audition setting or a scene.”
Unlike stage acting, which often requires exaggerated expressions and projection for a live audience, acting for the camera demands subtlety and precision. Chavira emphasized that students will learn how to adjust their performance style to suit film and video.
Throughout the course, students will gain practical experience with essential acting techniques.
“These skills will be some vocal techniques, how to be heard clearly on camera, how to demonstrate objectives, character wants, needs,” Chavira explained.
He also noted the importance of technical awareness, such as “how to make sure that your face is always being seen on camera” and how to use positioning and movement effectively.
One of the key features of the course is its hands-on approach.
“There will be a camera present every class,” Chavira said, ensuring that students consistently practice and improve their on-screen presence.
In addition to providing students with technical skills, the course is designed to foster personal growth and confidence. Chavira encourages students to step outside their comfort zones.
“Be willing to be uncomfortable, to have fun and to be willing to be challenged,” he advised. “You’re going to learn to be comfortable watching yourself on camera, which can be anxiety-inducing … But it’s very necessary in order to improve.”
Chavira also hopes to enhance the learning experience by inviting guest speakers.
“There may be folks at a nearby acting studio in Oklahoma City that I would like to bring in if the schedules align,” he said.
Acting for the Camera will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. Students interested in enrolling or learning more about the course are encouraged to contact Chavira directly.
