The OCCC Student Government Association works to ensure student voices are heard while helping to shape campus life through advocacy, events and leadership opportunities. By serving as a link between students and administrators, the organization addresses student concerns, supports campus organizations and encourages greater involvement in college decision making.
According to Trey Brite, a senator on the SGA Judiciary and Elections Committee, the organization serves as a bridge between students and administrators.
“Our main purpose at OCCC is to be a mediator between the student body and our administration,” Brite said. “We take issues and complaints from students and move them up to the administration.”
In addition to advocating for student concerns, the SGA works to create a more engaging campus environment. The organization regularly hosts events designed to bring students together and encourage participation in campus activities.
Earlier this semester, for example, the SGA organized a Valentine’s Day fair, which Brite described as a fun event that helped build community among students. Events like these, he noted, serve a larger purpose beyond mere entertainment.
“It kind of lifts morale,” he explained. “It spreads awareness of what we’re doing and gets people interested in advocacy for themselves because they know that we exist.”
By organizing activities and maintaining a visible presence on campus, the SGA hopes more students will feel comfortable sharing their concerns and ideas.
The SGA also supports student organizations by providing funding that allows clubs to organize their own events and activities. This support helps create additional opportunities for students to get involved and build connections on campus.
In addition to hosting events, the SGA focuses on issues that affect students’ daily experiences. One recent initiative includes a survey asking students about extending dining hours on campus. The proposal would allow students to access food later in the day and possibly add a dinner option.
The survey, led by Legislative Senator Ruby Valdez, is part of the SGA’s effort to gather student feedback before presenting suggestions to the administration.
Another important part of the SGA’s work is the upcoming election for student leaders. The elections allow students to run for leadership roles and participate in shaping campus decisions. Serving in the SGA provides students with opportunities to develop leadership skills, represent their peers and gain experience working with campus administration.
For students interested in leadership and advocacy, the SGA offers a chance to make a difference in the college community. Through events, initiatives and student representation, the organization continues working to ensure that student voices are heard here on campus.
