The OCCC library recently hosted a lively and forward-thinking workshop titled “Using AI Tools as a College Student” as part of its popular Tech Corner series. Delivered by Courtney Oliphant, instruction and virtual services librarian, the session drew students who are eager to explore how artificial intelligence can support their academic journeys responsibly and ethically.
With bright, neon-inspired slides featuring swirling lightbulbs, playful doodles and upbeat phrases like “Let’s Play!” and “Time to Share,” Oliphant set a welcoming, energetic tone from the start. She guided participants through a series of learning objectives:
- Discovering helpful AI tools
- Understanding ethical use
- Getting started confidently without compromising personal learning or academic integrity
Oliphant emphasized what AI does well – planning, brainstorming and getting unstuck – and demonstrated practical applications such as breaking down research papers, generating ideas and estimating project timelines. She introduced free tools like Goblin Tools, highlighting features such as the Magic To-Do list, Estimator and Compiler for turning scattered thoughts into clear action steps. Attendees also explored large language models including ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, which excel at sparking creativity and refining ideas.
A core message from Oliphant was what AI cannot replace: a student’s unique voice, personal growth and authentic experiences.
She led a thoughtful discussion on AI ethics, addressing misconceptions about “free” tools, including hidden costs in data, energy and water use. She also highlighted privacy risks that can arise when sharing personal information, accountability for AI-generated content and the importance of following individual instructors’ policies.
In addition, Oliphant walked students through a step-by-step process for preparing academic research papers, emphasizing the importance of the following:
- Crafting strong research questions
- Building to-do lists
- Estimating time requirements
- Developing effective search terms
- Searching the library’s EBSCOhost research databases
She encouraged collaboration, sharing insights and checking syllabi for AI usage rules. By the end, attendees left with greater AI literacy, practical tool recommendations and a clear understanding of how to use AI as a supportive partner rather than a shortcut.
Oliphant’s approachable style, combined with the library’s innovative approach, made the workshop both educational and empowering. Events like this one highlight OCCC’s dedication to preparing students for an AI-influenced future while keeping learning authentic and ethical.
